Food made in a home kitchen.
Last reviewed July 2, 2026
Most meals on Bayti are cooked by home chefs in their own kitchens under their state’s cottage food rules. You see a short disclosure on every one of those listings and on your receipt. This page explains what it means, why we show it, and how we work to keep home-cooked food on Bayti trustworthy.
What “cottage food” means
Cottage food laws let people legally sell certain foods that they make at home. Under these rules, the food is prepared in a private home kitchen that is not subject to the routine government food-safety inspections that a restaurant or commercial kitchen receives. Every state sets its own list of what can be sold this way and under what conditions.
Because this matters to you, we place the disclosure directly on each home-chef listing and on your receipt — not buried in fine print.
Why we tell you this
We believe you should know how your food was made before you order. A home-cooked meal from a neighbor is a different thing than a meal from an inspected commercial kitchen, and both have their place. Our job is to be transparent so you can decide what you’re comfortable with.
If you have a food allergy, are cooking for someone medically vulnerable, or simply want more detail, we encourage you to ask the chef directly through the order conversation before you buy.
How Bayti keeps it trustworthy
- Halal commitment. Every chef signs a halal commitment at onboarding and lists the source of their meat and ingredients on their storefront.
- Clear disclosure, every time. The cottage-food notice appears on every home-chef listing and on every receipt — you never have to go looking for it.
- Real reviews. Star ratings come only from customers who actually ordered, so the community’s experience is visible to the next person.
- One conversation per order. You can reach the chef about ingredients, preparation, or allergens through a single thread tied to your order.
- Application review. We review each vendor application and confirm what their state requires before they can go live.
A note on stores and farms
Not everything on Bayti is cottage food. Halal stores and farms may operate under different rules, and their listings carry the disclosure that fits how they operate. The notice you see always reflects that specific vendor.
